Dear Nassau COBA Members,
On Monday, December 16th, The Nassau County Sheriff’s Department Recruit Class #113 graduated from the Sheriff’s Academy.
This class of 34 Correction Officer’s marks the 3rd and final Recruit Class of 2024, with a total of 74 new Correction Officers graduating under this new COBA Executive Board.
This is the most Correction Officers to graduate in a single year in OVER 15 YEARS!!!
COBA will continue the fight for new Correction Officers during what seems to be a never-ending staffing crisis and ordered overtime. As we've stated numerous times before, we understand the stress that comes with low staffing levels and the missed moments with family and friends due to ordering.
While we are also sympathetic to the many Officers who wish to work overtime, there needs to be a balance so if you want to work, the overtime is there for you and if you just want to come in for your 8 hours and go home, that opportunity also exists.
The County has budgeted 100 new Correction Officers for 2025. With the anticipated retirements, promotions and usual attrition during next year, we realize that even with 100 new Officers, our staffing level is still an uphill battle.
Please know that this process is a marathon not a sprint. We have taken a very important step towards bolstering our staffing levels this year and we will not stop fighting until we achieve our goals.
We wish Recruit Class #113 all the best!!!
