MEMORIALIZING THOSE WE LOST

May 30, 2013

Message from John Jaronczyk, President

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan, in an effort to honor the work and dedication of Correctional Officers nationwide, signed Proclamation 5187 which designated the first full week in May every year as "National Correctional Officers Week."  This year, in honor of National Correctional Officers Week, the Board Members of the Nassau County Sheriff's COBA Widow's and Children's Fund held a solemn ceremony at the NCSD Memorial Monument to honor the fallen Correction Officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, as well as remembering the deceased Officers who have died while in active service with the Sheriff's Department. This year's memorial service took place on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at the Nassau County Correctional Center, 100 Carman Avenue in East Meadow. We want to thank all those who attended, but most importantly, ask that you join us in keeping the families of Correction Officers we lost in your thoughts and prayers. Our craft is one of the most dangerous in this country and every day our members are confronted with this harsh reality. As their elected President, I am extremely proud to represent these hardworking and dedicated professionals. It is thankless work and you have to be tough; both physically and mentally. So when the members of Nassau COBA come together to do charity work for our community and volunteer for those less fortunate, we are humbled that it is not just our members and their families standing shoulder to shoulder at these events. Joining us at some of these events are community leaders.  This powerful act on their part should not go unrecognized. We appreciate their support and sympathy and our Benevolent Association is grateful for their trust and understanding, especially for our widows and children.
