The Nassau County Sheriff's Correction Officers Benevolent Association Widow's & Children's Board, Sheriff Dzurenda, Department Administrators, COBA Board Members, Department Members and Support Staff took part in a Ceremonial Ground breaking today at the site where the Sheriff's Department 9/11 "Survivor Tree" will be planted. The site for this Memorial will be directly across from the Officers Memorial in the circle in front of A Building. We would like to acknowledge the members of the Widow's & Children's Board for their time and effort in conjunction with the Sheriff and his staff to bring this memorial to life at our facility.
The "Survivor Tree" is grown from seedlings from the original Survivor Tree found at Ground Zero. The Survivor Tree serves as a landmark symbolizing resiliency and hope.
Members are offered an opportunity to support the effort and be a permanent part of the memorial by purchasing a personalized brick that will surround the memorial.
The finished memorial is expected to be unveiled on the 20th Anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2021.
